As former long-term city dwellers that made the move a few years ago, we understand the thought processes and requirements when considering this amazing lifestyle change.
We are both professional people who have enjoyed living in different countries, cities and towns. We had often discussed the possibility of a bed and breakfast business, coupled with a respite retreat for families doing it tough. This aligned with our professions; Dawn, with her PhD and background in psychology and behavioural science and Neil as a CEO of his own business and experience in the finance world. Some years ago we were enjoying a weekend away in the pretty village of Bangalow and whilst exploring the beautiful countryside we fell in love with the Byron Bay Hinterland.
We found a magical piece of acreage nestled on a hilltop between Byron Bay and Lismore and decided there and then that it was the perfect spot to provide wonderful holidays for people from all over the world. Our purpose built home therefore includes self-catering holiday accommodation for those seeking beauty, amazing views, the chance to recharge batteries from often hectic city lives and great access to so many stunning areas and vibrant populations.
Highland Retreat was born! We decided to pool our experiences, our delight in meeting people and love of real estate and create a new life for ourselves, and others. The lessons we have learnt from the experience of moving from a city, finding a plot of land, buying it, gaining planning permission, overseeing the build of our lovely house and then starting and operating a business offering respite and holiday accommodation has been a wonderful adventure and lifestyle change..
Many of our guests also fell in love with this area. Some decided to relocate and we helped them in the process of finding their dream property. Other guests stayed with us at Highland Retreat because they had appointments to look at properties, but were often disappointed by the limited pre planning regarding property viewings. They mentioned that their time wasn’t put to the best use because they had not had the opportunity to arrange a number of viewings prior to their arrival.
We recognised that there is a gap in the market for a professional, objective, personalised service to help people through the property purchasing process. Escape to the Hinterland was born!
